Thanksgiving kitchen essentials
You do not need a new kitchen for one dinner. Check what you already own, then fill the gaps that make cooking, serving and storing the meal easier.

First priority: a food thermometer
Choose a digital food thermometer you can read easily, with a probe that reaches the center of the food. An infrared surface thermometer cannot tell you whether the middle of a turkey is cooked. Keep a clean probe available even if the bird has a pop-up timer.
TempPro / ThermoPro TP19H instant-read thermometer
A folding-probe option for checking the breast, thigh, wing and reheated sides. This is a spot-check tool; do not leave it in the oven. Branding may appear as TempPro or ThermoPro—confirm the TP19H model and supplied instructions.
Already covered? A working digital food thermometer you own can do this job. Check its instructions and accuracy before the holiday. An oven-safe leave-in probe is an optional extra, not a substitute for checking several locations.
A stable pan and a rack that fit
Measure the oven and check clearance with the rack in position. Include the pan’s handles in your measurements. Choose a stable setup you can lift safely when it contains a hot turkey and juices; lightweight disposable pans need substantial support underneath.
Cuisinart Chef’s Classic 16-inch roaster with rack
A stainless-steel roasting setup with a removable rack. The manufacturer lists overall dimensions of approximately 20.7 × 12 × 4.9 inches, so the “16-inch” name is not the full footprint. Turkey shape varies: check fit rather than assuming a weight rating guarantees room.
Use what you own: an appropriately sized, oven-safe roasting pan and rack in sound condition. Verify any pan’s stovetop compatibility before trying to make gravy directly in it. A separate saucepan is the straightforward alternative.

Carving and gravy: essentials versus extras
A sharp knife and stable board are essentials. A carving fork and fat separator are conveniences. Avoid buying a large set if one missing item solves the problem.
| Product | Why it belongs | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| OXO Good Grips Carving & Cutting Board | A large board with a grooved side for carving and runoff. Manufacturer dimensions are about 21.1 × 14.5 inches; check your counter and sink. | A clean, stable, food-safe board large enough for the bird. |
| Slicing and carving knives | A sharp edge helps make clean slices instead of tearing the meat. | A sharp chef’s knife you control comfortably. |
| OXO Good Grips 4-Cup Fat Separator | Separates settled pan juices from the fat layer for gravy. | A heat-safe bowl and spoon for carefully skimming fat. |
| Balloon whisk | Gradually incorporates stock into the gravy base. | A whisk already in your utensil drawer. |

Prepare for leftovers before guests arrive
Set out shallow refrigerator/freezer-safe containers, matching lids, labels and a marker. Several smaller containers cool food more effectively than one deep pot. Pick sizes you will actually reheat, and leave room in the refrigerator for air to circulate.

Also check dry oven mitts, serving spoons, a ladle, trivets and a refrigerator thermometer. These practical gaps matter more than decorative extras. Read the cooling and storage guidance.
