Let’s do it, step by step

Make a stable base
Wash and peel the carrot if desired. Trim the ends, cut into manageable lengths of about 5 cm, then slice a thin piece from one side so each section sits flat.

Trim a flat side so the carrot stays stable. Slice into planks
Set the flat side down. Curl the fingertips of your guiding hand into a claw, with your thumb tucked behind them. Cut lengthwise into even planks about 2–3 mm thick. Work slowly.

Cut evenly sized, thin carrot planks. Make the matchsticks
Lay one plank flat, or stack only a few if they remain stable. Cut lengthwise into strips the same width as their thickness. Stop and reposition whenever the stack slips.

Slice the planks into narrow matchsticks. Check for consistency
Aim for similarly sized strips so they cook evenly. Save irregular trimmings for soup or stock. Consistency matters more than speed or perfect restaurant dimensions.

Aim for similar sizes so the pieces cook evenly.
SMALL FIXES, BETTER RESULTS
If it doesn’t go to plan
The carrot rolls?
Create a flat side first and keep it against the board.
The stack slides?
Use fewer planks or cut one at a time. Never chase speed.
One skill learned. One step forward.
Try the exercise, then mark this lesson complete when you feel ready.
